As the global economic crisis soars, household incomes plunge: food insecurity affects academic success, career goals and professional merit, making it urgent for parents worldwide to invest more in quality food to bring out the genius in their children.
As the world faces a cost of living catastrophe on an unprecedented scale, families are struggling to make ends meet, investing more in quality food is crucial for achieving academic excellence and professional merit.
When it comes to health, academia and climbing the career ladder at a steady pace, balanced meals matter and could make a huge difference amongst pupils, students and young adults.
Inflation is generally defined as the continued increase in the average prices of goods and services in a given region.
A Statista report On Global inflation rate from 2000 to 2022, with forecasts until 2028 shows that “[…] Inflation is currently high across many areas of the globe, even in regions that have not witnessed high inflation for several decades. A series of compounding issues such as rising energy and food prices, fiscal instability in the wake of the pandemic, and consumer insecurity have created a new global recession, and global inflation in 2023 is estimated to have reached 6.9 percent. This is the highest annual increase in inflation since 1996.”
Not to mention the rising cost of the housing market…
Statista is a global data and business intelligence platform with an extensive collection of statistics, reports, and insights on over 80,000 topics from 22,500 sources in 170 industries.
It has been scientifically and medically proven that well-fed children have highest opportunities to excel in school.
The World Health Organisation (WHO)’s views on how crucial quality food is for babies, infant, toddlers, and the youth is unequivocal.
In one of WHO’s ScienceDirect Category articles entitled Why nutrition programs for children remain important, it reads:
“The initiation of healthy dietary practices, commencing with breastfeeding from an early age, not only fosters optimal physical growth but also plays a crucial role in enhancing cognitive development. This cognitive development is considered a pivotal aspect in ensuring the overall well-being of an individual as they mature. The significance of ensuring access to quality nutrition for children, who are future leaders, cannot be overemphasized. Therefore, guaranteeing their access to adequate nutrition emerges as a paramount factor within the realm of public health, as it directly shapes the vitality and potential of the upcoming generation.”
Meanwhile, many studies have proved how parents from higher socio-economic backgrounds / status who are financially able to feed their children with freshly cooked meals with fresh ingredients, are more likely to grow children with a higher IQ.
In other words, the freshness and quality of food matters more than just being full, especially when children are young and still developing.
While society and schooling systems often focus on cognitive abilities and analytical skills our editorial also believes the foundation for any learning starts with ensuring that children are well nourished both physically and mentally.
A recent UNICEF-World Bank analysis report on poverty send chills down the spine: “An estimated 333 million children globally are living in extreme poverty […]”.
These statistics show that millions of children are facing hunger and are surviving on extremely poor diets, which significantly impacts their educational performance and engagement.
Decades ago, who would have thought that eating a balanced meal would become a luxury?
Our editorial is aware that as a parent, you might need to treat yourself to a new car, a new house…. Either as a self-gift or to indirectly show off that you socially belong to the upper class.
As a parent, there is no shame if an economic crisis has forced you to park your car to trade quality food for your household with what you spent on petrol on a monthly basis.
Food insecurity compromises pupils and students’ grades, making any career goal unattainable and unachievable.
Balanced meals matter when it comes to great achievements from a tender age, throughout adulthood and beyond
Below are the reasons why as a parent you may put on hold personal projects to save your children from hunger and malnutrition.
You may put on hold a mortgage yet to be, a nice car, a nice pair of shoes and invest more on quality food.
As previously published in several of our successful articles and books: Mother Nature is the most talented artist of them all. Mother Nature remains the most talented artist. This is almost a leitmotif at The Bridge Magazine.
Physician Hippocrates (460-370 BC) – back to whom the course of Western medicine can be traced– believed that diseases had natural causes and thus required natural cures: he used various plant-based remedies in his treatments.
Hence Hippocrates is known today as the Godfather of Western medicine, and it is of course from his name that the Hippocratic Oath, the medical pledge made by all doctors and medical practitioners, is derived.
Did you know? It has been medically proven that being unable to provide balanced meals to your child/children may affect their IQ.
The lack of nutritious meals impact children’s cognitive development because it has been associated with persistent stress and anxiety.
Research has found that nutritional deficiencies such as iron deficiency in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life can impact their cognitive, socio-emotional, motor, and physiological health, even changing the actual structure of their brain.
As modern mankind faces economic backlash, it becomes urgent to draw a parallel between diet (breakfast, lunch, snacks, drinks…) and academic/ professional performances in humans.
Including brain-boosting foods such as: berries, citrus fruits, dark chocolate, nuts, eggs, avocados, salmon, olive oil, beets, rosemary, bone broth, and turmeric into your diet enables your children to enhance their memory, their focus as well as their concentration.
According to nutritionists, the most efficient strategy is to follow a healthy diet that includes many fruits, vegetables, wholegrains and legumes. Feed your children with protein from plants, opt for healthy fats such as organic palm oil, sunflower oil, olive oil rather than saturated fats.
According to recent research from Harvard Health, some of “the best brain foods are the same ones that protect your heart and blood vessels, including the following”: Leafy Greens. Leafy greens like kale, spinach, collards, and broccoli boast brain-healthy nutrients such as vitamin K, lutein, folate, and beta carotene.
Green leafy vegetable
Salad greens, kale and spinach are rich in vitamins A, C, E and K, and broccoli, are also rich in many of the B-vitamins. These vegetables also contain an abundance of carotenoids-antioxidants that protect cells and play roles in blocking the early stages of cancer.
Fatty fish
The American Heart Association recommends eating 2 servings of fish (particularly fatty fish) per week. A serving is 3 ounces cooked, or about ¾ cup of flaked fish. Fatty fish such as: sardines, tuna, mussels, mackerel, herring, salmon, oysters, anchovies are high in omega-3 fatty acids
Berries
Research shows that flavonoids are the natural plant pigments that give berries their brilliant hues and also help to improve memory
Tea and coffee
It is believed coffee and tea help to fight diseases which attack nerve cells in the human brain, making one hard to move. Studies suggest that caffein may ease Parkinson’s early symptoms while others show that drinking coffee and tea might help protect our brain from it to start with. A study also shows that drinking 3 to 5 cups of coffee daily may lower chances of contracting heart disease.
For families of an ethic minority:
Did you know? it doesn’t make you or your children less human or less “civilised” if you include an ethnic recipe in your diet, especially if it has been proven healthy and or nutritious.

Beyond all the steps surrounding a child’s academic success lies an ordinary or yet crucial aspect: well-fed children have higher opportunities to succeed.
How nutrition directly impacts a child’s education.
Researchers also revealed the negative impacts of hunger on children’s social-emotional skills.
It is hard to focus when humans are hungry. Hunger leads to a low attention span, behavioural issues such as: aggressiveness and disciplinary issues in the school, disrupting children’s future degrees , thus employment.
So as parents, if you have failed to do your homework by failing to put balanced food on the table for your children throughout the academic year, DO NOT be surprised if they rely for instance on clearance to land a place at university.
Remember! Elite universities entry grade requirements are ruthless and malnourished students CANNOT afford outstanding A Levels results. Which is a pity as only God knows how many gifted students come from disadvantaged background/circumstances.
How does the lack of balanced meals affect learning abilities
Childhood famine has a domino effect on children’s and adults’ physical and mental well-being as well as on their academic experiences.
A lack of nutritious meals for children means an uncertain future. Famine is the source of health issues, and personal challenges. It has been scientifically proven that famine affects academic and professional performances.
Famine affects human focus, learning and or their training abilities: as in, their abilities to focus in the classroom, lecture room to learn new skills.
According to studies, over 88% of teachers and lecturers, acknowledge the negative impact of hunger on concentration.
Meanwhile, more than 77% of teachers and lecturers, noticed poor academic performance and behavioural issues in undernourished students.
Equal opportunities must even start from the womb: From what you feed yourself from pregnancy to birth leading up to babies’ food and children’s plate.
Ensuring all children have the nutritious food they need to reach their full potential in the classroom must be one of parents’ priorities.
If nutrition affects a child’s ability to learn, it is because poor nutrition usually impairs an individual’s memory, level of focus as well as alertness.
Nutrition impacts brain development, memory and cognitive function, energy, attention and focus, which are key to excel academically.
Malnutrition continues to be a leading cause of death in children under the age of 5. Every child deserves to be well fed.
Healthy nutrition is a basic human right:
The right to food is recognised in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights under the umbrella of the right to an adequate standard of living, treasured in the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
Investing in healthy food should be our priority. A healthy and balanced nutrition is of paramount importance, from conception till the end of life; it supports children and adults’ physical growth, development and upkeeps good health and wellbeing.
Our editorial addresses a pious thought for pupils, students, teachers, lecturers and parents … worldwide who have lost their lives.
Our editorial is saddened regarding the numerous children, students and parents from around the world, who have been robbed the right to education and parenthood, whether it be by being kidnapped, killed, abused or starved.
The number of pupils, students and parents snatched has recently hit the headlines in Mainstream Media and social networks. It is with a bruised heart that our editorial realizes that many pupils and students around the world will not attend their schools and universities. Just like these teachers and lecturers who suddenly lost their lives doing their job. Our editorial addresses a pious thought for all these souls.
