The BIPAGA-Grab. It may be another Easter of austerity for most, but for some international investors it’s pieces of land swapping hands instead of chocolate eggs, and nowhere more so than in beach resorts such as Bipaga-Kribi in Cameroon, where hectares of sand are being sieved through exchange in Africa’s gold-panning Eldorado.

This Easter, many wealthy international land investors will be gifting partners or loved ones golden eggs in the shape of sand shares in the beach resort of Bipaga-Kribi, Cameroon.
Owning a strip of BIPAGA-Kribi –also known as “the treasure island”– is the latest trend among land investors prompt to secure some of these sandy hectares (title deeds attached) in a bid to shore up investments in the luxury holiday resort sector of hotels and real estate.
This Bipaga ‘sand grab’ is attracting rapid speculation, since the Cameroonian beach resort is also rich in ore and awash with other natural resources, which speculators are impatient to capitalise on before prices spiral upwards.
It is believed that four ongoing projects in the area –three of which are in the field of mining for oil, hydrocarbons and liquefied gas– are to dramatically boost the economy of Cameroon, and thus, in turn, Bipaga in Kribi. The fourth project is the Kribi deep sea port development. According to experts, the main port of five to 16 metres depth will receive large vessels with a capacity of almost 100,000 tonnes.
