As we head towards the end of January, the hopes   we ended 2021 with are to come to fruition throughout 2022 and beyond only if coupled with a content attitude, hope and optimism.

Everyone with the ability to enjoy their physical and psychological attributes as human beings should appreciate how lucky they are in building their own lives.

Recent facts on global deaths related to stress raise concern: according to the Center for Disease Control at the National Institute on Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH), ‘110 million people die every year as a direct result of stress. That is 7 people every 2 seconds.’

  

Hope is an optimistic state of mind based on an expectation of positive outcomes related to events and circumstances in one’s life or the world.

 

NIOSH is the main US federal agency responsible for conducting research into occupational safety and health matters.

 

Also, scientists suggest worrying can shorten your life span by as much as 17 years, so don’t pull your hair out for petty issues. Sudden emotional stress can be a trigger for cardiac problems, including heart attacks.

Life is not a smooth path; however, no matter how serious the situation is, remain calm and in control, do not have a panic attack. If you have lost a loved one, if you have lost your job, if your fiancée refuses to marry the day before the ceremony, if your household is in trouble, if your latest academic / medical results take your breath away, if you lost a fortune in a business deal.  don’t panic.

One animal study found that stress may worsen Alzheimer’s disease, causing its brain lesions to form more quickly. Some researchers speculate that reducing stress has the potential to slow down the progression of the disease.

There’s proven evidence that stress can affect how you age. One study compared the DNA of mothers who were under high stress –they were caring for a chronically ill child– with women who were not. Being permanently happy is possible but in order to reach this emotional state you have to become satisfied with what you already have. This does not equate to a lack of ambition: instead it is about working hard continuously to achieve your goal while enjoying your current situation prior to change.

According to Barbara Lee Fredrickson, a distinguished American Professor of Psychology at the University of North Carolina, positive people are able to maintain a wider perspective and see the big picture which enables them to identify solutions and thrive; whereas negative people maintain a narrower perspective and tend to focus on problems but not solutions to those problems (i.e. they get trapped in ruminations).

In a sense, there is a bit of hope in everyone, if not, we would give up living. Hope inspires forward action instead of stagnation. Hope is free of charge: we lose nothing if we choose to be hopeful. Hope contributes to a stable type of self-esteem.

 

No matter what you are struggling with in your life, whether it is a difficult relationship, a painful diagnosis, or just general disenchantment, allowing hope in will brighten your life.

Being permanently happy is possible but in order to reach this you will have to become satisfied with what you already have.

 

This does not mean a lack of ambition: it is about working hard continuously to achieve your goal while enjoying your current situation in the meantime.

 

The only thing that you can control is yourself, therefore no matter how hard life is, if you are able to adapt by changing your actions without betraying your principles, then you will be able to be happy.
