The UK Supreme Court ruled that Scientology is a religion in a landmark judgement but, paradoxically, it is ranked as the world’s most dangerous cult.
On 11 December 2013, under the principles of equality and non-discrimination in matters of religion, the highest Court in the UK declared that English Scientologists could legally solemnize their marriage in a religious wedding ceremony at their main London Church.
Experts say there are up to 1,000 cults in the UK, many of them tiny, and many based in seemingly ordinary households.
Cult expert Amanda van Eck of the Information Network on Religious Movements explains: “Cults can be as small as two people, where one is the leader and one is the follower.”
Metaphorically, a cult or sect imagery could be seen as what William Shakespeare described in Macbeth as looking ‘like the innocent flower but be the serpent under it’.
But what makes some people join cults or sects? Promises of self-improvement could be one explanation. Too often the insecure and unhappy are lured in by charismatic leaders promising to solve their life problems…
